James Ritty, a Dayton saloon owner known for his “Pure Whiskies, Fine Wines, and Cigars,” is billed as the inventor of the cash register. This came as a result of his employees’ knack for taking customers' money and pocketing it, rather than depositing it. Along with his mechanically inclined brother John, they designed, created and patented "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier" in 1879.
