Dayton, setting itself apart from other older Midwestern cities, has very wide and straight streets in its downtown region.. Back in the early days when Dayton was a marketing and shipping center, this enabled wagons drawn by teams of oxen to turn around easily. Also, a good number of today's streets were once canals for barges.
